Why it exists
The mark was treated as part of the garment rather than something added on top. Pressed into the cloth and tonal against it, so it stays visible without turning the chest into a billboard.
The rest follows from that: heavyweight cotton, a cut wide enough to wear on its own, and nothing added that was not doing a job.
